Connecting with the

Academic Community

The following resources may assist you in connecting with the academic community.

Literary Clubs and Societies

Literary clubs and societies are a great way to connect and network with students, professors, and other academic professionals in the English department on your campus. These clubs and societies hold several events a year including workshops, book sales, social events, and conferences. They can offer valuable experience in both setting up and participating in an academic conference (click hear to learn more about preparing for a conference). Participation in such clubs and societies also looks great on your CV and resume (click here to learn more about CVs and resumes).

Here are a few examples of the clubs and societies at CSUN:

Iota Chi Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta (Note that of there are multiple chapters in colleges and universities across the nation)

Associated Graduate Students of English (AGSE)

Nothridge Creative Writing Circle (NCWC)

Critical Theory Club

The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle of Higher Education is a newspaper and website that presents news, information, and jobs for college and university faculty members, administrators, and Student Affairs professionals. The website contains daily news and advice columns; thousands of current job listings; an archive of previously published content; discussion forums; and career-building tools such as online CV management, salary databases, and more. If you are interested in an academic career, it is a great resource to familiarize yourself with ongoing discussions and debates in academia, such as:

-The state of the humanities

-Whether or not one should attend graduate school

-How best to prepare students for the realities of the academic job market
